For lunch I walked up to Taco Bell, it’s about three blocks away. I had 2 chicken soft tacos and a water.
Before lunch my blood sugar was 83, 2 hours after it was 104. So I feel good about my choice.

I have been put on a testing schedule of sorts until my next nutritionist appointment. Since I have been diagnosed, I have been testing before breakfast and before dinner as my nurse had said. Now my testing schedule looks like this:
First day – Before Breakfast, 2 Hours After Breakfast
Second day – Before Lunch, 2 Hours After Lunch
Third day – Before Dinner, 2 Hours After Dinner, Bedtime
Fourth day – Go back to First DayI need to try to put these times in as reminders on my iPhone, but I’m not sure I’ll end up doing it.
I noticed that they updated the Glucose-charter iPhone application. I will test it when I get comfortable with the method I use to measure my weight. The food database that shows glycemic index and glycemic load is pretty nice. -

So I have an appointment with a nutritionist in a couple of weeks, and I am required to keep a food diary
at least until then. I think the thought that someone else will be looking at this and critiquing it keeps me from eating sometimes. Who wants to look like they aren’t doing what they need to do? I’ve heard that weight loss studies say that people who keep a food diary end up losing more than people who don’t. Let’s hope they are right. -

I live in the Deep South, USA. We have a cultural diet that is not conducive to reducing your chances for diabetes. Fried food is the order of the day, and a lot of otherwise healthy vegetables are almost always seasoned with salty pork products. Tea here is always sweet and iced (although strangely I’ve never been a fan). Barbeque is often covered with brown sugar-flavored sauces. What’s a southern diabetic to do?
My thoughts as a total non expert:
First, you can peel off the skin off the fried meats – but get baked alternatives. You can use rosemary (just about my favorite seasoning) to give it a lot of flavor. Fried turkey usually has a lot of meat that was nowhere near the oil, but is just as juicy and tasty. Vegetables will still taste good if you leave off the fatty seasonings, it may be an acquired taste, but hang in there and you can get used to it.
Use Splenda in your sweet tea instead of sugar, or add it to unsweetened tea. For barbeque, learn to love mustard-based sauces (aka “yellow sauce”). They are a lot more healthy than the carb-laden “red sauce”.Now all we need is a diabetic-friendly Moon Pie.

I survived the visit to the podiatrist. It is actually one of the most non-threatening medical environments I’ve been in. He trimmed my toenails and did a much better job than I could ever hope to do on my own.
He said I needed to increase the circulation in the calves and in my feet, so he recommended a medium compression stocking. For shoes he recommended New Balance (which I was glad, they are my favorite brand) 606s or 608s. I went to a local shoe store and picked up a pair of black 608s and a pair of white 608s. I will alternate them so they don’t get worn out so soon. My old shoes – well, they looked very rough. He also said to never go barefoot.
The new shoes feel great. I’m starting to feel like a whole new person.

What motivates you? For me, I don’t ever want to be that thirsty ever again, and I don’t want to spend so much time in the bathroom.
Here’s some thoughts on that (with apologies to Jeff Foxworthy):
If you have to pee so much that you get email from the bathroom asking you to pay rent, you might need to be checked for diabetes.
If you have to pee so much that after doing the laundry, your significant other buys you a box of Depends, you might need to be checked for diabetes.
If you are so thirsty you get a big straw and just start using the bathtub as your cup, you might need to be checked for diabetes.
If you are so thirsty that you are causing a drought, you might need to be checked for diabetes.
Ok, those probably suck. Maybe I will think of something better someday.

Today I went to my last diabetes education class. I will see a nutritionist in two weeks. Starting tomorrow, I have to document everything I eat between now and then. I’ve got a podiatrist appointment this afternoon, hopefully all will go well.
I’d have to say the diabetes education experience has been very rewarding. I was glad to meet and talk with other diabetics and receive so much good information. Now I feel I can focus on my particular treatment plan.

I went to a couple of grocery stores over the weekend looking for bread that was stone ground and less than 15 carbs per slice. No luck. I did however find a Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain 15 Grain Small Slice bread that has 13 grams of carbs per slice! It is very tasty and makes it easy to come up with a quick meal. I don’t even notice that the slice is smaller.
My wife found a bread that is made from brown rice, so I am interested in checking that out.

There is a lot of talk about the benefits of using cinnamon to lower blood sugar. I’m not going to debate those points here, but I will say if you are going to take it, don’t use a spoon:
Cinnamon Challenge – a little humor for your day.

My doctor’s visit went well I think, he was pleased at the progress I had made. He wants me to try and keep fasting under 100 and 2 hours after eating under 120. He also added Metformin to my Amaryl.
He referred me to an ophthalmologist and a podiatrist. He advised me to try to walk 20-30 minutes a day and do some strength training too. He’s a great doctor, he listened to all my complaints and questions and didn’t treat me like he was in a hurry to get me out of the door. It’s nice also to have a little affirmation that I’m doing what I am supposed to do.
