Well, it wasn’t as fun as when I went to see my wife’s ultrasound for my little boy, but it wasn’t bad. They looked at me from the front and from each side. I didn’t even have to take off my clothes, they just pushed them around. It didn’t hurt at all, and I’m not in any pain, so I am hoping that when the doctor looks at the pictures he won’t find anything bad. But if they do find anything bad, I guess that will be something new to blog about. My doctor did say I could resume my metformin.

Before I went to the hospital to get my ultrasound, I stopped at Walgreens to get a bottled water to help my bladder stay full. The guy running the register asked me if I wanted to donate money for juvenile (Type 1) diabetes research. I donated five dollars, and he gave me a coupon worth five dollars towards one of their custom photo products.
I’d like to ask folks to go by Walgreens and donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Who knows, perhaps your donation will be the money needed to get to a cure for our Type 1 friends.

Well, I heard from my doctor’s nurse. My blood work looked fine, but they wanted me to come back in to give another urine sample. I did so, and it looked to me to be much lighter than it did before.
They called me back and said it still had blood in it so I have to go for a renal ultrasound and a bladder ultrasound.
Wish me luck.

I was informed that my insurance company will only pay for one HbA1c test every 91 days. That makes sense, but it wasn’t something that I knew. I cannot wait to see what my next one will be.
Still no word on the blood tests from yesterday, but I’ve noticed my urine getting lighter, so I am thinking my days on metformin may be over.

I was feeling well today. I went to lunch with a coworker who has Type 1, we talked about all sorts of diabetes geek stuff, like his meter that sends his BG readings directly to his pump which saves him a step. Then I walked back to my office. I went to the bathroom and noticed that my urine was kind of dark looking. I thought maybe it was something I ate, but three hours later it was still discolored. I called my doctor’s office and they asked me to come in. I gave a sample there, and it looked a lot darker since it wasn’t diluted by the water in the toilet. They took some blood and the doctor told me not to take my metformin until I heard from them. I can still take my amaryl.
I’m nervous.

There is a show that comes on CNBC on Sunday nights called Dlife TV. It is hosted by the lovely and talented Miss America 1999 Nicole Johnson. She has Type 1 diabetes. I usually record it and watch it later.
I watched it last night and they did a segment on diabetes etiquette with Dr. William Polonsky. He’s the founder and president of the Behavorial Diabetes Institute. They discussed a card that you can download called “diabetes etiquette”. The tag line says “for people who DON’T have diabetes”.
You can print these up and give them to people who don’t seem to be very understanding about your diabetes and give them something to think about.
You can download the card here:

Sometimes when eating out I get a vibe from the server that the reason I order water with lemon and food on the cheaper side of the menu, and often ask to have my food tailored to get rid of the bad stuff , plus never getting appetizers or deserts, is because I’m a really cheap person.
That’s ok, I am determined to get this right no matter what people might think.

I got a free Accu-chek Compact Plus from my CDE yesterday! Now I have to:
-Use up all the strips on my Breeze2 (I paid $50 for them, I’m gonna use them)
-Get a prescription for the Compact Plus strip drums and lancets (Sure I can buy cheapo lancets but my insurance will pay for the strips and lancets under one copay so why not?)
-Order the IR unit, the software and get a USB-serial cable.I like this meter. It’s black, it looks like something a man would use. It looks like a Fluke meter’s, badder, angrier brother. Ok, maybe I exaggerate.

My pants that I had been wearing have gotten very saggy and they won’t stay up. I have some older, smaller pants, I tried them on and they fit! My belt was kind of ridiculous – it was so loose on the tightest setting that it looked really stupid. A coworker had a probe that I used to make a couple of new belt notches so I could wear it again. It will be nice to wear pants that I don’t have to worry about falling down just because I am carrying things in both hands.
It feels good.

I called my insurance provider and asked them which were their preferred meters. They said anything by ACCU-CHEK or OneTouch. From what I’ve looked at, I like the ACCU-CHEK Compact Plus and the OneTouch Ultra 2 the most. The Ultra2 makes you code, but it can upload to SugarStats. The Compact Plus uses the 17-strip drum. They both have interfaces to the PC, which I’d like to use.
I’d like to know what people think of these two meters. I like my Bayer Breeze2 but I have got to have a meter that is covered by my insurance to reduce strip costs.
